South Rim View / Grand Canyon 2025
Yellow Lesser Goldfinch, Grand Canyon / South Rim
After a fall trip to Zion and the north rim and south rims of the Grand Canyon, I was very inspired after such a spectacular tour. This painting is a view found close to the South Rim Lodge, and naming it seems irrelevant to me (and irreverent), so I’ve decided to name it after the pretty yellow Lesser Goldfinch, which is one of the inhabitants of the canyon rim. Just one living creature can be seen in the vast space and variety of material represented besides the many forms of plant life in the desert, a tiny bird included at the bottom left.
I’ve enjoyed making this painting and loved the range of color in the many details I noticed from the painting process. Painting it with an eye to being faithful to the reality of the place offers a sort of respect, a reckoning of every layer and rock that I can see, and honoring the time and natural processes that occurred in the making of this amazing canyon--if you will.
What more can be said? My painting will provide a patron the ongoing thrill of reckoning our lives as incredible and lucky timing to get to see such things and to somewhat comprehend the scale of time and geology of this amazing planet. Every time this painting is seen a new thing will be understood and appreciated.
This painting is for sale and available framed or unframed, and I can assist with any framing requirement. The frame seen is merely a virtual creation, and for example.

The painting featured above is one of my most recent oils, Chloe Enjoying the Park, a fictional view of the very real place at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. There are some fascinating aspects about the place which I’ll comment on.

Castle Hill Lighthouse
Here's my latest underway, a 12x24 inch oil of the Castle Hill Lighthouse. There's more to do, some foreground work and the fishing boat, some fussing here and there. I'm happy with it. What do you think?

The Wreck at Beaver Tail Lighthouse
My painting of The Wreck at Beaver Tail Lighthouse
This lighthouse is a fun place to visit, especially on a day with high surf. It's at the south end of Jamestown, RI, at the west edge of the Newport Harbor entrance. Here I've imagined a small craft that got loose or wrecked somehow on the jagged rocks A shipwreck must have happened several times?
